SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new

    Amends the Illinois Public Aid Code. Provides that in an effort to control the epidemic of childhood obesity, the Secretary of Human Services may seek a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture to allow the State to specify certain foods that may and may not be purchased in Illinois with the benefits funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly the Food Stamps Program). Requires the Secretary to consult with members of the General Assembly in developing the waiver and to obtain approval from the General Assembly before implementing the waiver.

1    AN ACT concerning public aid.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Public Aid Code is amended by
5adding Section 12-4.4a as follows:
 
6    (305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new)
7    Sec. 12-4.4a. SNAP; waiver to determine food that may be
8purchased in Illinois; public health policy. In an effort to
9control the epidemic of childhood obesity, the Secretary of
10Human Services may seek a waiver from the United States
11Department of Agriculture to allow the State to specify foods
12that may and may not be purchased in Illinois with benefits
13funded by the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
14Program (SNAP) (formerly the Food Stamps Program). The
15Secretary shall consult with members of the General Assembly in
16developing the waiver and must obtain the approval of the
17General Assembly prior to implementing the waiver.
