HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Rock River, known for its beauty and
3ecological importance, flows south through Rockford, then
4southwest across northwestern Illinois, passing Oregon, Dixon,
5Sterling, and Rock Falls before joining the Mississippi River
6at Rock Island; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Rock River provides opportunities for
8conservation and recreation for many residents of this State;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Rock River has had an important role in
11Illinois history, and it attracts many tourists each year to
12such spots as the area in Dixon where former President Ronald
13Reagan once served as a lifeguard and his favorite fishing
14spot, now called "Dutch Landing", located just southwest of
15Lowell Park; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Designating the roads along the Illinois portion
17of the Rock River as a Scenic Route will encourage residents
18and visitors alike to explore, appreciate, and enjoy the many
19wonders of the Rock River; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE

1SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the Rock River Scenic Route is
2designated as follows:
3        (1) from the Illinois-Wisconsin State Line at Shirland
4    Avenue, along South Bluff Road in Rockton Township to
5    Rockton Road on County Highway 9;
6        (2) along Rockton Road from South Bluff Road to Race
7    Street in Rockton;
8        (3) along Race Street from Rockton Road to Main Street
9    in Rockton;
10        (4) along Main Street from Race Street to Hononegah
11    Road (County Highway 8);
12        (5) along Hononegah Road from Main Street to Illinois
13    Route 251;
14        (6) along Illinois Route 251 from Hononegah Road to
15    State Street in Rockford;
16        (7) along State Street from Illinois 251 to Illinois
17    Route 2;
18        (8) along Illinois Route 2 from State Street through
19    the remainder of Winnebago County and through Ogle County
20    into Lee County to Palmyra Road;
21        (9) along Palmyra Road from Illinois Route 2 (east) to
22    Illinois Route 2 (west) in Whiteside County;
23        (10) along Illinois Route 2 through the remainder of
24    Whiteside County into Rock Island County to 94th Avenue
25    North (County Highway 2); and
26        (11) along 94th Avenue North from Illinois Route 2 to

1    Illinois Route 84 (the Great River Road); and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
3is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
4State regulations, plaques or signs giving notice of the name;
5and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That units of local government that maintain any
7portion of the Rock River Scenic Route are urged to enhance
8suitable areas along the route; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency
10and the Illinois Bureau of Tourism are requested to post the
11Rock River Scenic Route's location on their Agency websites,
12and to produce and distribute brochures and other related
13matter that will make the route known to the public; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be delivered to
16the Illinois Secretary of Transportation, the Illinois
17Historic Preservation Agency, the Illinois Bureau of Tourism,
18and to each of the local governments having jurisdiction over
19any portion of the route.
