HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Ken and Jackie Pickerill were united in marriage
3on August 16, 1953, in DeKalb; the couple spent 48 years
4together until Jackie's passing in 2001; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ken Pickerill built the first baseball field at
6what is now Traughber Junior High School in 1956; years later,
7he funded several projects on the grounds of Oswego High
8School, including one of his proudest accomplishments,
9"Jackie's Field of Dreams", after his late wife, which is now
10home to the Oswego Cats and members of the American Amateur
11Baseball Congress; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Ken and Jackie Pickerill were both teachers at
13Oswego High School before opening the Jacqueline Shop in 1957
14in downtown Oswego; Jackie left teaching after 1957 to work
15full-time in the store; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Following his retirement from teaching, Ken
17Pickerill continued to oversee Oswego athletics as Oswego High
18School's head baseball, wrestling, and football coach; he
19coached the Panthers to 3 undefeated seasons in a row between
201958 and 1960; from 1955 to 1969, he served as Oswego High
21School's Athletic Director; he was inducted into the Oswego
22High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1976 and the Football

1Hall of Fame in 2000; and
 
2    WHEREAS, To honor his years of coaching and support of
3Oswego athletics, the Oswego High School Football Stadium was
4named Ken Pickerill Stadium in 2005; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jackie Pickerill founded the well-known ladies
6fashion apparel store, Jacqueline Shop of Oswego in 1957; she
7was one of the founders and a past president of the Oswego
8Business Association; she was also highly regarded in the
9women's fashion industry and served as a board member of the
10Apparel Fashion Center in Chicago; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ken and Jackie Pickerill both individually and
12collectively contributed endless leadership, dedication, and
13support to the Oswego community and beyond; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
16SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the active bridge
17spanning the Fox River on Washington Street and Route 34 in
18Oswego as the Ken and Jackie Pickerill Commemorative Bridge in
19honor of their work; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
21is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with

1State and federal regulations, plaques or signs giving notice
2of the Ken and Jackie Pickerill Commemorative Bridge; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
5presented to the Illinois Secretary of Transportation and the
6Village of Oswego.
