HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Mental illnesses, such as depression, bipolar
3disorder, schizophrenia, and many others, can lead to suicide
4attempts if left untreated; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mental illness is recognized as a disorder of the
6mind and body; if left undiagnosed, undertreated, or untreated,
7mental illness increases the chances of an attempted or
8successful suicide; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Many suicides are derived from depression and
10other mental disorders, a substance abuse disorder, or a
11combination of both; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The stigma associated with suicide is the result
13of a lack of understanding of mental illness; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The survivors of suicide represent a large group
15of people who suffer alone and in silence; and
 
16    WHEREAS, For every successful suicide, there are an
17estimated minimum of 6 suicide survivors; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the
19United States; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we express our support for improved suicide awareness in the
4State of Illinois in order to educate citizens about mental
5illness and other disorders that can lead to suicide and
6successful diagnosis and treatment of the underlying causes of
7suicide, thereby increasing the numbers of survivors.
