HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 69
3seconds; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is on the rise with 5.4
5million Americans currently living with the disease and an
6estimated 16 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with
7the disease by 2050; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Currently, 210,000 people in Illinois live with
9the disease; there will be 220,000 in 2020, and 240,000 in 15
10years; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is an unrelenting,
12progressive condition that destroys brain cells, and currently
13no cure exists; Alzheimer's places significant financial
14burdens on families and businesses, with businesses losing
15billions a year in lost productivity and replacement expenses
16for employees who miss work or quit to care for a relative; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In Illinois in 2010, there were 579,505 Illinois
18family members and friends who provided over 650 million hours
19of unpaid care - valued at 7 billion dollars - to their loved
20ones with Alzheimer's and other dementias; and

1    WHEREAS, The impact of Alzheimer's and other dementias on
2Illinois families, the health care system, and society as a
3whole is of great importance; the need for home and
4community-based services for those with Alzheimer's is on the
5rise and caregiver stress is at an all-time high; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a looming public health
7crisis and we call upon all policymakers to join in the efforts
8to raise awareness and to serve the hundreds of thousands of
9persons with Alzheimer's and other dementias in Illinois, their
10families, and caregivers; and
 
11    WHEREAS, On April 7, 2011, Alzheimer's Advocates will speak
12up for the needs and rights of people with Alzheimer's and
13their families, and ask the Illinois legislature to make
14Alzheimer's disease a priority public health issue in the
15State; advocates will speak up for the needs and rights of

18public health issue in the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we proclaim April 7, 2011 as the Annual Alzheimer's Association
22Advocacy Day in the State of Illinois.
