HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the
4Village of Lostant on the occasion of the village's 150th
5anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Village of Lostant was founded in Hope
7Township in southern LaSalle County in 1861 during the first
8months of the Civil War; the village was originally named
9Ellsworth, in honor of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, the first
10officer to be killed in the Civil War; the village was renamed
11Lostant in 1863 in honor of a stockholder of the Illinois
12Central Railroad; the village was formally incorporated in
131867; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Located at the intersection of the Illinois
15Central and New York Central Railroads, the Village of Lostant
16has served as an important grain shipping point for
17southwestern LaSalle County since its inception; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Village of Lostant, with a population of 498,
19is representative of many small towns in rural Illinois;
20Lostant provides important services to southwest LaSalle
21County, including volunteer fire protection, volunteer
22ambulance service, a library, a school, a bank, a post office,

1a variety of farm services, and several small manufacturers;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, Lostant has always provided an excellent
4educational opportunity for local residents; the village's
5first school was a one room school built in 1862; the village's
6first two-story school house was built in 1868; students in
7Lostant consistently match or exceed the performance of their
8peers around the State of Illinois; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lostant's residents have served their country in
10every war since the village's founding; the village's cemetery
11includes a veteran from the Spanish-American War and at least
1214 veterans of the Civil War; American Legion Post 173
13continues to serve the veterans of the area; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Lostant is the hometown of Air Force Colonel
15Milton Hartenbower, the 684th person to fly at Mach 2; Colonel
16Hartenbower served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam,
17and helped design early remote control aircraft during his 27
18years in the United States Air Force before retiring to his
19hometown; in addition, noted Chicago sculptor Laredo Taft
20favored clay mined in Lostant for his models; and
 
21    WHEREAS, The citizens of the Village of Lostant will
22celebrate the 150th anniversary of the village's founding in

1the summer of 2011; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Lostant on the
5occasion of the village's 150th anniversary and wish them
6continued success and happiness in the future; and be it
7further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Fred Hartenbower, Mayor of the Village of Lostant,
10as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
