HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Marion
4Joyce Dunn of East St. Louis, who passed away on August 12,
52011; and
 
6    WHEREAS, She devoted her life to the students of East St.
7Louis School District 189 for 44 years; she began her career at
8Garrison Elementary School, followed by Attucks Elementary
9School; and
 
10    WHEREAS, She served as a Physical Education teacher,
11counselor, and vocational guidance counselor at Lincoln Senior
12High School; she was the first African-American woman to teach
13driver's training in the State of Illinois; she held the
14position of Title I Director for 20 years and culminated her
15career as the Assistant Superintendent in charge of federal and
16State grants; and
 
17    WHEREAS, She was a lifelong member of the Greater New Hope
18Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as the financial
19secretary for over 30 years; and she authored a Young Matron's
20Handbook for the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Women's
21Department; and

1    WHEREAS, She was actively involved in the community,
2serving as a member of the East St. Louis Chapter of Delta
3Sigma Theta Sorority for 65 years, as well as serving as a past
4President; she was a member of the National Council of Negro
5Women, the NAACP, the Lincoln University Alumni, and the East
6St. Louis Library Board; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
10Marion Joyce Dunn; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Marion Joyce Dunn as a symbol of our
13sincere sympathy.
