HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On October 23, 2011, an earthquake, measured at
37.3 on the Richter scale, struck eastern Turkey near the City
4of Van; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Over 500 victims have perished and thousands more
6have been injured from the earthquake; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The earthquake left thousands of residents
8homeless, requiring a massive humanitarian aid effort to care
9for the displaced; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Hundreds of aftershocks have shaken the area since
11the quake hit, further exacerbating an already difficult rescue
12and recovery effort; and
 
13    WHEREAS, More than $2 billion in relief funds are expected
14to be needed to fully help the nation of Turkey recover from
15this natural disaster; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Turkey is regularly hit by violent earthquakes;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, The people of Turkey have displayed courage,
19strength, and determination in the aftermath of the earthquake;

2    WHEREAS, The people of the State of Illinois and the nation
3of Turkey have developed a strong relationship based on mutual
4respect and interest; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we express our sympathy for all those affected by the 2011 Van
8earthquake and share the distress and despair of the people of
9Turkey over this tragedy; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the Niagara Foundation, to be transmitted to the
12Republic of Turkey.
