HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of
4Wadsworth on the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of the
5Village; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Wadsworth area was not settled as early as
7many other communities in Lake County; it was not until the
8mid-1840s that people followed the upper reaches of the Des
9Plaines River to the area's great oak groves and meadows; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 1873, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul
11Railroad completed the construction of a line between Milwaukee
12and Chicago which ran along the east bank of the Des Plaines
13River; hoping to increase his land's value, local farmer John
14Lux platted a village site in 1874; the "Milwaukee Road"
15accepted the plat as a station stop, naming it Wadsworth after
16Elisha Wadsworth, a major Milwaukee Road stockholder; and
 
17    WHEREAS, A post office opened in Wadsworth in 1874, but the
18station was primarily used as a milk collection point for the
19area's numerous large dairy farms for Chicago delivery; because
20of the large amount of clay found in the area, 2 drainage tile
21factories and a brick factory came into operation near the
22station by 1886; and

1    WHEREAS, Since much undeveloped land still remained around
2Wadsworth in 1958, Tempel Smith, owner of Tempel Steel Company
3of Chicago, decided to purchase 5,000 acres next to the
4original village for Tempel Farms, home to a troupe of noted
5Lipizzan horses; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1962, most residents feared the annexation of
7the land surrounding Wadsworth, including Tempel Farms, into an
8aggressively expanding Waukegan; Wadsworth's residents voted
9to incorporate their village and elected Albert Heiser the
10first village president that same year; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Village of Wadsworth will celebrate
12incorporation with a 50th Anniversary Community Celebration
13from August 17-19, 2012; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate the people of Wadsworth and wish them the best
17for the future; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to Village President Glenn Ryback as a symbol of our
20respect and esteem.
