HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Dorolyn
4Academy of Music and Dr. Dorothy L. Bounds on the occasion of
5the 30th anniversary of its founding on October 20, 2012; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music will celebrate its
7anniversary at the Center for the Performing Arts at Dorolyn,
8in Oak Park; the event will be hosted by Dr. Quincy L. Johnson,
9D.D.S.; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music was founded on
11September 24, 1982; it has countless reasons to celebrate its
1230 years of service, but the academy is most proud of the vital
13role it has played in nurturing and developing the artistic
14gifts of thousands of children and youth across the Chicago
15area, many of whom now enjoy successful careers in the music
16industry; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music provides technique
18and performance curriculum in voice, piano, organ, percussion,
19woodwind and brass instruments, guitar, dance, and theater
20performance to the communities of Oak Park, River Forest,
21Forest Park, and other parts of the Chicago area; and

1    WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music is the recipient of
2the State of Illinois Treasurer's Award, in recognition of
3outstanding dedication and commitment to the African-American
4communities of Illinois, the Oak Park Development Corporation
5Nicholas Award for Community Commitment, and the Oak Park Area
6Arts Council Best of the Class Award for Community Outreach;
7the academy has been commended by the Rotary Club of Oak Park
8and River Forest for its commitment to community service; it is
9an active member of the Oak Park Area Arts Council and the Oak
10Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Dorolyn Academy of Music is helmed by Dr.
12Dorothy L. Bounds, a gifted and compassionate leader who brings
13over 50 years of performing arts experience; her vision was to
14establish a one-of-a-kind music institution, with professional
15instructors who would capture and catapult the curiosity of
16children and youth who chose to explore the world of music, all
17at minimal-to-no-cost; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy L. Bounds has degrees and honors from
19McKinley Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi; she is a
20recipient of the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year from
21Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Alpha Lambda Chapter, Chicago;
22she received the Outstanding African-American Woman of the Year
23Award, presented by "We Women" Western Chicago Area; she has
24been profiled by Channel 7 network and Harry Porterfield as

1"Someone You Should Know"; she is listed in Who's Who in
2Professional and Executive Women; she is an Athena Award
3nominee for outstanding support of the Goals for Professional
4Women by Oak park's 19th Century Women's Club and a nominee for
5the board of directors of the Oak Park Chamber of Commerce; she
6has been Entrepreneur of the Year for Illinois and Northwest
7Indiana, received The Jefferson Award from NBC Channel 5, and
8received special recognition from the City of Chicago and Mayor
9Richard J. Daley for outstanding contributions and years of
10service to the Chicago area; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we congratulate The Dorolyn Academy of Music and Dr. Dorothy L.
14Bounds on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding
15of Dorolyn Academy; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Dr. Bounds and The Dorolyn Academy as an
18expression of our esteem and respect.
