SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On April 22, 2011, this year's Earth Day, Earth is
3facing consequences of climate change that may be caused by
4increased carbon production due to human activity; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It is incumbent on all citizens and communities to
6do their best to raise awareness about global warming and other
7environmental issues, like wasting water; and
 
8    WHEREAS, It is incumbent on all citizens and communities to
9do their best to cut their carbon production, shrink their
10carbon footprint, and reduce water waste; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
12Chicago is a federation of more than 60 community
13organizations, mosques, and schools representing the Muslim
14community in Illinois; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar
16calendar, when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining
17completely from eating and drinking during this time, for the
18whole month; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
20Chicago launched a campaign during Ramadan in 2009 called Green

1Ramadan to raise awareness among the Muslim community in
2Illinois about the environment and to encourage the reduction
3of carbon production, encourage recycling, and reduce wasted
4water and consumption; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
6Chicago will designate Ramadan every year as a Green Month,
7dedicated to raising awareness within the Muslim community
8about their responsibility about the Earth, the environment,
9and biodiversity; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the
12leading role of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater
13Chicago in raising awareness about green issues and the
14environment within the faith community; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That we designate the month of Ramadan, the 9th
16month of the Islamic lunar calendar, as a Green Month in the
17State of Illinois in order to promote awareness among faith
18communities about environmental issues, the reduction of
19carbon production, and the reduction of wasted water.
