SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jerald D. "Jack" Zallen of Herrin, who
4passed away on September 23, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jerald Zallen was born on August 7, 1936, in
6Lewiston, Maine; his parents were Morris and Arlene (Jordan)
7Zallen; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Jerald Zallen served his country with pride and
9distinction as a member of the United States Army during the
10Vietnam War; he served as a sergeant with Company B, 7th
11Cavalry of the 1st Division; in a football field-sized clearing
12called landing zone X-Ray during the Battle of Ia Drang on
13November 14, 1965, Mr. Zallen's unit was surrounded by 2,000
14North Vietnamese soldiers dug into the tunnel warren
15mountainside; the ensuing battle was one of the most savage in
16United States history; the actions of his unit were later
17portrayed in the movie, "We Were Soldiers"; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jerald Zallen was preceded in death by his
19daughter, Patricia Marie Zallen; his son, Richard F. Zallen;
20his former wife, Regina Zallen; and his parents; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Jerald Zallen is survived by his children, Jerald

1M. Zallen, Denise G. Zallen, Regina Michelle Bamber, and
2Michael A. Zallen; his grandchildren, Steven Robert Bamber,
3Sarah Paige Bamber, Jerald Zallen, and Shannon Zallen; his five
4half-brothers and half-sisters; his close friends, Lorraine
5and Ronald Bernsee and Sam Jorgensen; and his dog and longtime
6companion, Shadow; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
9his family and friends, the passing of Jerald D. "Jack" Zallen;
10and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Jerald Zallen as an expression of
13our sympathy.
