HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, During pregnancy, expecting mothers will receive
3a variety of tests for conditions such as Down Syndrome and
4other birth defects; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Moms have always known that movement is the best
6sign of their babies' well-being in utero; scientific studies
7indicate that kick counting, a daily record of moms' perception
8of their babies' movement during the third trimester, is a
9reliable, harmless, simple and effective screening for the
10babies' well-being; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Kick counting can document changes in the fetal
12movement pattern and can help moms-to-be alert their healthcare
13provider of potential problems; a timely evaluation can allow
14intervention and prevention of potential problems, including
15stillbirth; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The American College of Obstetricians and
17Gynecologists recommends kick counting as one method to monitor
18pregnancy health, through noting the time it takes for a baby
19to complete 10 movements, such as kicks, jabs, rolls, twists,
20and turns, when the baby is usually most active during the day;

1    WHEREAS, A mother's familiarity with her baby's movements
2helps identify changes that may indicate potential pregnancy
3problems, which can allow her provider to institute timely
4intervention; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we encourage the people of this State to help us in raising
8awareness of the importance of kick counting during pregnancy.
