HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a neurological disorder producing
3brief disturbances in the normal electrical functions of the
4brain that temporarily affects a person's consciousness,
5bodily movements, or sensations, while creating long-term
6effects on the lifestyle of individuals with epilepsy; and
 
7    WHEREAS, One in 26 people will develop epilepsy and one in
810 people will have an epileptic seizure during his or her
9lifetime; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Epilepsy can affect anyone regardless of their
11gender, race, age, religion, educational background, or
12socioeconomic status; and
 
13    WHEREAS, More people suffer from epilepsy than from
14Parkinson's Disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy,
15and cerebral palsy combined; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Epilepsy affects more than 65 million people
17worldwide; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Although there is no known cure for epilepsy,
19existing drug therapy, surgery, and other nonpharmacological
20treatments enable approximately 80% of individuals with

1epilepsy to lead normal lives with no seizures or a significant
2reduction in seizures; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a complex disorder that requires
4further research to find a cure and prevention; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The public is often unable to recognize common
6seizure types or to respond with appropriate first aid; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The annual observance of Purple Day on March 26
8advocates for the rights, humane treatment, and appropriate
9education of all persons with epilepsy, while raising awareness
10with families, professionals, and the general public to better
11understand this lifelong disorder; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we designate March 26, 2014 as "Purple Day" and invite all
15citizens to participate by wearing purple; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, We call upon all citizens, government agencies,
17public and private institutions, businesses, and schools to
18recommit our community to increasing awareness and
19understanding of epilepsy through education while ensuring
20that all individuals with epilepsy lead a full and productive
21life; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to Kurt W. Florian, Jr., President and Chief
3Executive Officer of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater
4Chicago, as an expression of our support for the purposes and
5goals of "Purple Day".
