2 | | WHEREAS, For decades, Du Quoin mayors and city councils |
3 | | worked without success to procure State and federal funding to |
4 | | build an overpass across the mainline Illinois Central Railroad |
5 | | tracks; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Without an overpass, traffic on Main and Popular |
7 | | Streets was unnecessarily blocked by numerous daily freight, |
8 | | coal, and passenger trains frequently delaying emergency |
9 | | services to significant portions of town; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable John E. Rednour, Mayor of the City |
11 | | of Du Quoin from 1989 to 2013, successfully secured funding for |
12 | | construction of the overpass; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Rednour led a walking procession across the |
14 | | completed overpass in 1995; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The Popular Street Overpass contributes daily to |
16 | | the smooth, timely, and safe passage of commercial and private |
17 | | traffic through the city and increases emergency access to all |
18 | | parts of Du Quoin; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Without the effective leadership of Mayor Rednour |
20 | | in securing the funding necessary to build the Popular Street |

1 | | Overpass, at little or no expense to the people of Du Quoin, |
2 | | the project would not have been possible; and |
3 | | WHEREAS, On March 10, 2014, the City of Du Quoin renamed |
4 | | the Popular Street Overpass after former mayor, John E. |
5 | | Rednour, in honor of his many accomplishments while in office, |
6 | | most notably, the construction of the overpass; therefore, be |
7 | | it

8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
9 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE |
10 | | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we recognize the City of Du |
11 | | Quoin on renaming the Popular Street Overpass after former |
12 | | mayor, John E. Rednour; and be it further
|
13 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
|
14 | | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
|
15 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs |
16 | | giving notice of the name; and be it further |
17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
18 | | presented to Du Quoin Mayor Rex Duncan and to the Secretary of |
19 | | the Illinois Department of Transportation.
