HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Quality education that is free from intimidation
3and terror is a universal right that is of vital importance to
4human society and a cornerstone of human rights; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram militants attacked
6the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School in Borno State,
7Nigeria and abducted almost 300 female students from the
8campus; the terrorists subsequently drove them away from Chibok
9in pickup trucks into the Sambisa Forest; and
 
10    WHEREAS, For the past 3 weeks, the Nigerian military has
11sought these militants and their captives, with little apparent
12success; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Some of the kidnapped girls have been forced into
14"marriage" with their Boko Haram abductors, while others have
15been taken across borders to Cameroon and Chad; two of the
16girls have died from snakebite and about 20 other girls are
17ill; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The United States government has issued a
19statement of concern over the fate of the missing students, but
20sterner action may be required to free the students from their
21captors and assert the freedom of education for all; therefore,

2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we urge President Obama to do everything in America's power to
5assist for the release and return of the young ladies abducted
6by Boko Haram militants; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8delivered to President Barack Obama.
