AMENDMENT TO SENATE RESOLUTION 70


2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend Senate Resolution 70 on page 4, by 
3replacing line 17 with the following:

 
4"and
 
5    WHEREAS, We rightly appreciate that the current Turkish 
6government has
made positive improvements over the last 8 years 
7in its relation to the
Ecumenical Patriarchate with respect to 
8the return of two significant
properties formerly in dispute, 
9with respect to allowing Orthodox clergy in
lands outside 
10Turkey to apply and gain citizenship in Turkey to help
ensure 
11the possibility of patriarchal succession, and with respect to 
12the
physical security of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the 
13recent uncovering
and thwarting of a plotted assassination of 
14Patriarch Bartholomew; and
 
15    WHEREAS, We recognize that the current Turkish government

continued to negotiate and publicly address these and other 
2related issues
with a commitment to their resolution in a 
3manner acceptable to all
interested parties; and
 
4    WHEREAS, We are encouraged by the improving relationships 
5between the Greek and Turkish people here in the State of 
6Illinois and between the peoples of Greece and Turkey; 
7therefore, be it".
