SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, All citizens of Illinois should be made aware of
3the ever-present dangers posed by potentially harmful
4substances in their home, work, and play environments; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Children too often have access to over the counter
6and prescription medications and potentially harmful household
7products; and
 
8    WHEREAS, For more than 50 years, the nation has been
9observing National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW); the Illinois
10Poison Center celebrates March as Illinois Poison Prevention
11Month (IPPM) to help prevent unintentional poisonings and to
12share tips for promoting community involvement in poison
13prevention; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 2013, the Illinois Poison Center, the oldest
15and one of the largest poison centers in the nation, will be
16celebrating its 60th year of providing poison prevention and
17treatment recommendations to the people of Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Illinois Poison Center is a mainstay in the
19emergency medical care system of the State of Illinois and is
20recognized nationally for its contributions to poison
21treatment and prevention; and

1    WHEREAS, Nearly 50 percent of the 77,000 poisonings
2reported last year to the Illinois Poison Center involved
3children under the age of 5 and which most could have been
4prevented; and
 
5    WHEREAS, More than 90 percent of the exposure calls
6received from the public are treated over the phone, quickly
7and safely by experienced, expert staff of the poison center
8rather than in an emergency room; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we do hereby proclaim
11March 2013 to be POISON PREVENTION MONTH in THE STATE OF
12ILLINOIS and congratulate the Illinois Poison Center for
13providing outstanding public education and treatment advice to
14the State of Illinois for 60 years; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the Illinois Poison Center.
