2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Jacoby Dickens of Chicago; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens was born in Panama City, Florida, | ||||||
5 | in 1932; he and his family moved to Chicago's south side early | ||||||
6 | in his childhood; he graduated from Wendell Phillips High | ||||||
7 | School and went into business as a real estate developer in the | ||||||
8 | same south side neighborhoods where he was raised; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens would purchase, renovate, and | ||||||
10 | lease apartment buildings in Chicago; during the height of his | ||||||
11 | success he managed more than 100 apartments; in 1971, he sold | ||||||
12 | his real estate holdings and purchased several bowling alleys | ||||||
13 | in Chicago and began running those; while running the bowling | ||||||
14 | alleys, he joined the board of Seaway National Bank, one of the | ||||||
15 | largest African American-owned financial institutions in the | ||||||
16 | country; he joined Seaway National in 1979 as vice-chairman and | ||||||
17 | became chairman in 1983; and

18 | WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens has distinguished himself with his | ||||||
19 | philanthropic efforts; he designed a loan and scholarship | ||||||
20 | program at DePaul University named in his honor and has donated | ||||||
21 | more than $1 million to Chicago State University; on December | ||||||
22 | 7, 1995, the Chicago State University Physical Education and |

1 | Athletics Building was renamed the Jacoby D. Dickens Physical | ||||||
2 | Education and Athletics Center; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens embodied the spirit of Chicago | ||||||
4 | State University; he valued education and dedicated himself to | ||||||
5 | helping the university achieve its mission to help students; he | ||||||
6 | had extensive involvement with many aspects of the university, | ||||||
7 | including serving on the board of trustees for the university | ||||||
8 | and the board of directors of the Chicago State University | ||||||
9 | Foundation; his commitment to education will live on in The | ||||||
10 | Jacoby Dickens Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to | ||||||
11 | multiple students annually, allowing these students to more | ||||||
12 | easily afford higher education; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens's is survived by his wife, Veranda, | ||||||
14 | and all the Dickens family; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
17 | Jacoby Dickens, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
18 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
19 | further

20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Jacoby Dickens as an expression of | ||||||
22 | our deepest sympathy.
