SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Robert E. Manning, Jr. of Peoria, who
4passed away on July 22, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was born on November 16, 1931,
6in Peoria; his parents were Robert E. and Catherine Irene
7(Gorman) Manning; he married Lois M. Wilson in Oshawa, Ontario,
8Canada on April 25, 1953; after the passing of his first wife,
9he married Rosemary Donnelly Crowley on March 24, 2001; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. graduated from the Spalding
11Institute in 1949, where he captained the football, basketball,
12and baseball teams during his senior year and was selected as
13an all-city quarterback in 1948; he attended the University of
14Notre Dame and graduated from Bradley University in 1953,
15lettering in varsity baseball at both schools; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. continued his baseball career
17beyond high school and college; he played collegiate summer
18leagues in Madison, Wisconsin, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada,
19and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; he played professional baseball
20from 1953 to 1954 for the Cleveland Indians and the New York
21Giants organizations in Peoria (Peoria Chiefs), Tampa,
22Florida, and Olean, New York; and

1    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. graduated from the University
2of Notre Dame Law School in 1960 and practiced law in Peoria
3from 1960 to 1977; he served as assistant State's Attorney in
4Peoria County from 1960 to 1967 before being appointed State's
5Attorney from 1967 to 1968; he was selected as an associate
6circuit judge in the 10th Circuit and a circuit judge in 1980;
7he retired in 1997; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of many civic and
9professional associations, including the Peoria County Bar
10Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the American
11Judicature Society, the Illinois Judges Association, the
12Spalding and Peoria Notre Dame High School Booster Clubs, the
13University of Notre Dame National Monogram Club, the Notre Dame
14Club of Peoria, the Bradley University Letterman and Chiefs
15Club, the Landmark Racquet and Health Club, the Knights of
16Columbus-Spalding Council, and the Benevolent and Protective
17Order of Elks Lodge #20; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of St. Bernard
19Catholic Church, where he served on the finance committee; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was preceded in death by his
21first wife, Lois; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Sharon
22O'Shaughnessy; and

1    WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. is survived by his wife,
2Rosemary; his children, Michael Manning, Lauren (Tom) Donlan,
3Linda Manning, Angela (Dan) Aeschliman, Robert (Kristen)
4Manning, James Manning, and Paul (Katie) Manning; his 18
5grandchildren; his 8 great-grandchildren; his numerous
6cousins, nieces, and nephews; his step-children, Karen (Bob)
7Metzinger, Debi (John) Redington, James (Gail) Crowley,
8William III (Laura) Crowley, and John (Chris) Crowley; his 13
9step-grandchildren; and his 2 great-stepgrandchildren;
10therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
13family and friends, mourn the passing of Robert E. Manning,
14Jr.; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Robert Manning, Jr. as an expression
17of our sympathy.
