2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Janie Morrison of River Grove, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on November 9, 2013; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Janie Morrison was born on August 5, 1949 in | ||||||
6 | Peoria; her parents were Earl and Ruth Morrison; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Janie Morrison graduated from Central College in | ||||||
8 | 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication | ||||||
9 | Arts; she went on to receive a Master of Education in Speech | ||||||
10 | Pathology from Trenton State College in New Jersey; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Janie Morrison enjoyed a long and distinguished | ||||||
12 | career in public service and was known as a fierce, relentless, | ||||||
13 | and passionate advocate for justice; after working for the | ||||||
14 | Neshaminy Federation of Teachers, she began her career at the | ||||||
15 | Temple Association of University Professionals in | ||||||
16 | Pennsylvania, where she served as Executive Director from 1992 | ||||||
17 | to 2001; in January of 2002, she returned to the Chicagoland | ||||||
18 | area to work as an assistant to Norman Swenson, President of | ||||||
19 | the Cook County College Teachers Union; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, While working at the Cook County College Teachers | ||||||
21 | Union, Janie Morrison met Illinois State Senator Dan Kotowski |

| |||||||
1 | during his senatorial campaign in 2006; following his victory, | ||||||
2 | Senator Kotowski asked her to become his District Director, | ||||||
3 | where she served with pride and integrity until her passing; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, As District Director, Janie Morrison was a | ||||||
6 | successful champion for constituents and veterans facing | ||||||
7 | employment, healthcare, and housing challenges; she became | ||||||
8 | well known by the people of her community for her great | ||||||
9 | compassion and eagerness to help those most in need; during her | ||||||
10 | career, she spearheaded the organization and execution of 6 | ||||||
11 | community job fairs and the creation of the Flight 191 Memorial | ||||||
12 | in Des Plaines; she also aided in the educational and | ||||||
13 | professional growth of over 30 interns during her time as | ||||||
14 | District Director; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Janie Morrison's lifelong passion was sailing; | ||||||
16 | she raced boats as a child and, as an adult, owned a sailboat | ||||||
17 | and regularly floated home on the Delaware River in | ||||||
18 | Pennsylvania; she also enjoyed Disney films and memorabilia; | ||||||
19 | and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Janie Morrison is survived by her mother, Ruth, | ||||||
21 | and her longtime companion, Sigurd Larsen; therefore, be it
| ||||||
22 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her | ||||||
2 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Janie Morrison; and be | ||||||
3 | it further

4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the family of Janie Morrison as an expression of | ||||||
6 | our sympathy.
