SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles L. Farinella of Morris, who
4passed away on July 7, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charles Farinella was born in Chicago; he
6graduated from DePaul Academy High School in 1950 and from
7Kansas State University, where he played on the Wildcat
8football team, with a master's degree in education; he served
9in the United States Army during the Korean War; he was a
10successful amateur boxer in high school and in the military;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Affectionally known as "Chuck" or "Coach",
13Charles Farinella coached track at Proviso East High School in
14Maywood from 1966 to 1992; he was head coach from 1973 to 1988;
15during his time at Proviso East, he coached, mentored, and
16educated a great number of teens; he coached nearly 100
17athletes who placed, won, or left their mark on the Illinois
18Track Association; his teams won a State title in 1980, placed
19third in 1976, and placed fourth in 1975 and 1985; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In addition to the State championships, Charles
21Farinella's athletes won numerous conference titles; his
22training techniques were considered revolutionary; these

1techniques stood the test of time and are commonly used in
2athletic programs around the world; his athletes fondly
3remember the "Coach Farinella whistle", which he used to
4motivate his young men while they competed; one of his most
5treasured legacies was coaching Greg Foster, who went on to
6become one of the greatest hurdlers in the world; in addition
7to creating an indelible mark on high school sports, Greg
8Foster won numerous State titles, held many national records
9during his high school career, and went on to win medals at the
10Olympics and the World Championships in the 110 High Hurdles;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Charles Farinella was preceded in death by his
13mother, Minnie Farinella, and by one brother, Joseph Farinella;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Charles Farinella is survived by his wife of 57
16years, Annette (nee Ancona) Farinella; 2 sons, Joseph (Maureen)
17and Charles "Chuck" (Sara) Farinella; 2 daughters, Laurie
18(Sheldon) Sobol and Carol (Paul) Radek; 7 grandchildren,
19Danielle and Anthony Farinella, Jordann and Megan Farinella,
20and Reese, Griffin, and Keagan Sobol; one nephew, Michael
21(Patty) Farinella; and one niece, Jodi (Jim) Fahrenbach;
22therefore, be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Charles L. Farinella, and extend our sincere condolences to his
3family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Charles Farinella as an expression
7of our deepest sympathy.
