SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 20/5

    Amends the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act. In a provision allowing students in the public schools to voluntarily engage in individually initiated, non-disruptive prayer, provides that such praying may take place at any time during the school day. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act is
5amended by changing Section 5 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 20/5)
7    Sec. 5. Student prayer. In order that the right of every
8student to the free exercise of religion is guaranteed within
9the public schools and that each student has the freedom to not
10be subject to pressure from the State either to engage in or to
11refrain from religious observation on public school grounds,
12students in the public schools may, at any time during the
13school day, voluntarily engage in individually initiated,
14non-disruptive prayer that, consistent with the Free Exercise
15and Establishment Clauses of the United States and Illinois
16Constitutions, is not sponsored, promoted, or endorsed in any
17manner by the school or any school employee.

19    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
20becoming law.
