HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the members of the
3Illinois House of Representatives that Pennoyer School in
4Norridge is celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Built in the winter of 1839, Pennoyer School's
7first schoolhouse was a one-room building with a wood-burning
8stove; the school has since grown into a complex educational
9facility serving over 400 students; and
 
10    WHEREAS, It was agreed that every adult in the area would
11contribute $5 for materials and would pitch in to help build
12the school on land donated by John Pennoyer, whom the school is
13named after; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 1893, the second and larger one-room school was
15built on the same site; a third school was built in the same
16location in 1920; in 1941, 2 new rooms were added to the
17building; in 1950, an additional 4 rooms and an all-purpose
18room were added; and
 
19    WHEREAS, In 1955, construction started on the school at the
20present Cumberland address; upon completion, the school
21building had 8 classrooms; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1991, renovations of the existing school
2building took place; the school continues to offer preschool,
3kindergarten, and elementary programs, as well as Special
4Education programs; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The school district has earned many awards and
6accolades throughout the years, including Academic Excellence
7Awards from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2009,
82010, 2011, and 2012; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11congratulate Pennoyer School as it celebrates the 175th
12anniversary of its founding and extend our best wishes to the
13administration, staff, and students for continued success in
14the future; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to Brad Voehringer, superintendent of Pennoyer
17School District 78.
