HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John
4Henry Samuel Wallace, who passed away on June 16, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Wallace was born on July 19, 1925; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Wallace served his country honorably and
7proudly as a World War II Naval veteran; he served his God
8morally and nobly as an ordained elder in the African Methodist
9Episcopal Church; and
 
10    WHEREAS, John Wallace graduated from Chicago State
11University with a master's degree in special education; he was
12a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and was a
13chartering member of two campus chapters; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Wallace taught at Malcolm X College where he
15also served as a Dean; he went on to become Executive Director
16of the Institute for the Study of Educational Policy at Howard
17University in Washington D.C.; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In the 1970s and 1980s, John Wallace took action
19against the predominately white New Trier High School in
20Winnetka after his son was forced to read Mark Twain's

1Huckleberry Finn aloud in class; recognizing the novel as
2racially intolerant, he took up this issue and appeared on
3Nightline with Ted Koppel and had numerous articles printed by
4the Washington Post; he went on to rewrite the novel, replacing
5the "N" word with "slave"; and
 
6    WHEREAS, John Wallace was preceded in death by his
7siblings, Jo Anne and James, and his sons, Johnny and Mark
8(Mary) Wallace; and
 
9    WHEREAS, John Wallace is survived by his wife of 62 years,
10Joan; his sons, Eric (Jennifer) and Victor (Karen); his
11grandchildren, Eric, Gregory, and Jahanah; his
12great-grand-daughter, Ja'Mayah; and his siblings, Mary
13Livingston and Peter (Katsuko); therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of
17John Henry Samuel Wallace; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of John Wallace as an expression of our
20sympathy.
