HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On June 7, 2016, five police officers were
3murdered in Dallas, Texas; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Four of those officers were members of the Dallas
5Police Department; one was an officer with the Dallas Area
6Rapid Transit police force; and
 
7    WHEREAS, At the time of their deaths, the officers were
8performing their sworn duty, guarding civilians during an
9emotionally bitter protest march that was being actively
10covered by the news media; and
 
11    WHEREAS, As a result of these officers performing their
12duties by standing guard, the killer knew exactly where they
13would be and was able to set up positions from which to ambush
14them; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In addition to the police officers who were
16killed, six other police officers and one civilian were
17injured; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The death toll of this incident, and the
19circumstances surrounding the shootings, have led it to be
20characterized as one of the worst atrocities in the history of

1United States urban violence; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The circumstances of this incident make it all the
3more essential that Americans respond as members of a common
4society and country, this response being the best (and possibly
5the only) way to avoid spiraling downhill into a mental state
6of hatred, fear, and bitterness; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The fallen Dallas Police Department officers are
8Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, and Patrick
9Zamarripa; the fallen Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer is
10Brent Thompson; they, and their fellow officers who were
11injured or maimed in this incident, will be remembered on the
12honor roll of their service by the police officers and
13civilians of the United States; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16pay solemn tribute to the memories of the fallen officers of
17Dallas, Texas, and to the traditions of service for which they
18and their families paid the ultimate sacrifice; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That we mark the adoption of this resolution with
21a moment of silent reflection in honor of these fallen heroes
22of American law enforcement; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution shall be
2presented to the Chiefs of Police of the Dallas Police
3Department and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police Department,
4as tokens of the honor paid by Illinois to these fallen and
5wounded officers, and as an expression of due deference to the
6police officers of the United States.
