SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to the families of those who
4have perished overseas while serving our country; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Gold Star is awarded by the United States
6Department of Defense to the immediate family of a fallen
7service member; the Gold Star has appeared on flags dating as
8far back as World War I, which families would hang in their
9windows to indicate that a loved one had been killed overseas;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, The United States began observing Gold Star
12Mothers Day on the last Sunday of September in 1936; the Gold
13Star Wives was formed prior to the end of World War II; the
14Gold Star Lapel Button was established in August of 1947; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The nation recognizes the sacrifice that Gold Star
16family members make when a loved one dies in service to the
17nation; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The strength of the United States Army is its
19soldiers and the strength of the soldiers are their families;
20the Army recognizes that no one has given more for the nation
21than the families of the fallen; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
3CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of Route 6 as
4it passes through the Peoria city limits as the "Gold Star
5Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
7is requested to erect at suitable locations consistent with
8State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
9giving notice of the name "Gold Star Families Memorial
10Highway"; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
13Transportation.
