SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of John Timmes of Peoria, who passed away on
4July 27, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Timmes was born in Jackson, Mississippi on
6February 19, 1925 to Ophelia Rembert and Charley Timmes; he
7married Kathryn Williams on August 11, 1956 in Ashland,
8Kentucky; he was educated in the Jackson, Mississippi school
9system and was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1943
10to 1945 during World War II; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Timmes began a long career in law enforcement
12as a patrolman in the Peoria Police Department in December of
131958; he was promoted to Sergeant in 1966 and worked in the
14juvenile and civic affairs division for the next 16 years; he
15and his partner and long-time friend, George Shadid, were the
16first integrated partners on Peoria's police force; after
17retiring from the police department, he worked security at
18Caterpillar, Inc., as head of security at the Peoria Civic
19Center, and at Peoria School District 150, where he worked
20security at Manual High School and Trewyn Middle School; he
21provided security for the Carver Community Center and at the
22Riverplex as a Peoria Park District police officer, until his
23final retirement in 2005; he was named Peoria Policeman of the

1Year in 1970 and was inducted into the Peoria African-American
2Hall of Fame Museum in 2000; his many other awards include the
3Lifetime Service Award from the Peoria Afro-American Police
4League in 2006; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Timmes was an avid tennis player who won many
6city tournaments with his favorite partner, Dr. James Stafford;
7he served on the board of directors of the Carver Community
8Center and was a member of the Bradley University Omega Psi Phi
9Fraternity, the Tri-County Urban League Guild, and Bethel
10United Methodist Church; and
 
11    WHEREAS, John Timmes was preceded in death by his parents;
12his daughter, Janique Timmes; his brother, Elbert Timmes; his
13niece, Joan Timmes; and his nephew, Milton Timmes; and
 
14    WHEREAS, John Timmes is survived by his wife, Kathryn W.
15Timmes; his daughters, Johnna N. Timmes and Carolyn Collins;
16his sisters, Doris (Walter) Nelson and Ida B. Kelly; his
17nephews, Charles (Valerie) Timmes and Vanness Nelson; his
18nieces, Cynthia Long and Patricia Timmes; his great-niece,
19Brittany (Steve) Graves; his great-nephew, Trenton N. Timmes;
20and a host of other family and friends; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1John Timmes, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
2friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of John Timmes as an expression of our
5deepest sympathy.
