2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of John H. "Jack" Barickman of Streator, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on October 4, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Barickman was born on January 28, 1921; his | ||||||
6 | parents were Bert and Agnes Barickman; he married Pauline Vanko | ||||||
7 | on October 17, 1953; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, John Barickman attended St. Anthony Grade School | ||||||
9 | and graduated from Streator High School in 1939 after earning | ||||||
10 | letters in three sports; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, John Barickman served with the 101st Airborne | ||||||
12 | Division during World War II and parachuted into Normandy on | ||||||
13 | June 6, 1944, and into Holland in September of 1944; he also | ||||||
14 | participated in the defense of Bastogne, Belgium with his unit, | ||||||
15 | the 506th Parachute Regiment, where he was wounded; he was | ||||||
16 | awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry | ||||||
17 | Badge, and four Battle Stars for his service; after being | ||||||
18 | wounded, he served as a parachute instructor at Fort Benning, | ||||||
19 | Georgia and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in November of | ||||||
20 | 1945; one of his fondest memories is meeting General Omar | ||||||
21 | Bradley during the 25th anniversary of D-Day in 1969; and

1 | WHEREAS, John Barickman worked at Owens-Illinois Glass in | ||||||
2 | various departments, spending most of his years in the steel | ||||||
3 | gang in the maintenance department; he retired in November of | ||||||
4 | 1983 after 33 years of service; he also worked in construction | ||||||
5 | for 10 years; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, John Barickman was a member of the former St. | ||||||
7 | Stephen's Church; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, John Barickman was a Red Cross volunteer for 25 | ||||||
9 | years during which time he donated 30 gallons of blood; he was | ||||||
10 | a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 and | ||||||
11 | participated in the Color Guard at funerals; in 1983, he was | ||||||
12 | elected to La Salle County Old Timers Hall of Fame in | ||||||
13 | recognition of his years playing baseball in the 1940s and | ||||||
14 | 1950s; he enjoyed reading about history, visiting Civil War | ||||||
15 | battlefields, attending Army reunions, and being with good | ||||||
16 | friends at the VFW and the YMCA; he also enjoyed baseball, | ||||||
17 | particularly the New York Yankees; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, John Barickman was preceded in death by his | ||||||
19 | parents; his wife, Pauline; his brothers, Dan and Bert | ||||||
20 | Barickman; his sisters, Alba Reihl, Julia Donaldson, and an | ||||||
21 | infant sister, Nancy Barickman; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, John Barickman is survived by his children, |

1 | Suzanne and Paul, and his grandsons, Matthew and Nathaniel; | ||||||
2 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
5 | family and friends, mourn the passing of John H. "Jack" | ||||||
6 | Barickman; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of John Barickman as an expression of | ||||||
9 | our sympathy.
