SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-808.2 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display non-government license plates. Provides that every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local government to which the vehicle belongs, to the license plate or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle approaching from behind. Exempts vehicles being used in undercover police operations. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-808.2 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-808.2 new)
7    Sec. 3-808.2. Prohibition of private plates on public
8vehicles.
9    (a) No vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of
10local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display
11non-government license plates.
12    (b) Every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local
13government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a
14sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local
15government to which the vehicle belongs to the license plate
16or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of
17the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle
18approaching from behind.
19    (c) This Section does not apply to vehicles being used in
20undercover police operations.
 
21    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
22becoming law.
