1 HOUSE RESOLUTION

2     WHEREAS, February is nationally recognized as Career and
3 Technical Education Month; and

4     WHEREAS, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in
5 Illinois provide instruction for careers in high-wage,
6 high-skill, and in-demand occupations in fields such as,
7 business and finance, healthcare, information technology,
8 advanced manufacturing, and human services; and

9     WHEREAS, CTE programs continue to strengthen the academic
10 knowledge and technical skills of students, provide smooth
11 pathways to and through postsecondary education and
12 employment, assist in meeting the Illinois Learning Standards,
13 and close achievement gaps; and

14     WHEREAS, CTE programs are instrumental in supporting local
15 communities, ensuring student success, and promoting
16 continuous improvement; and

17     WHEREAS, Approximately 414,000 students are enrolled in
18 CTE across the State of Illinois; and

19     WHEREAS, CTE prepares students for tomorrow's careers and
20 drives economic growth by matching employability skills with

1 workforce demand; and

2     WHEREAS, CTE provides relevant academic and technical
3 coursework leading to college credits and industry-recognized
4 credentials for secondary and postsecondary learners; and

5     WHEREAS, All students benefit from career-connected
6 learning, opportunities to develop and discover practical
7 skills and strengths, and career exploration; and

8     WHEREAS, February 23, 2019 marks the 102nd anniversary of
9 the signing of the Smith-Hughes Vocational Education Act of
10 1917, which was the first major Federal investment in Career
11 and Technical Education and laid the foundation for the
12 bipartisan, bicameral support for Career and Technical
13 Education that continues today; and

14     WHEREAS, The Strengthening Career and Technical Education
15 for 21st Act, known as Perkins V, will take full effect on July
16 1, 2019; therefore, be it

17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18 HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19 we designate February 2019 as Career and Technical Education
20 Month to celebrate Career and Technical Education across the
21 State of Illinois; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution be
2 presented to the Illinois State Board of Education and the
3 Illinois Community College Board.
