HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Cornerstone Services on
4the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Cornerstone Services was founded in 1969 as the
6Will County Sheltered Workshop by parents and community leaders
7who wanted to create new opportunities for individuals with
8disabilities, beginning with services for three people and
9growing ever since; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Since its founding, Cornerstone Services has
11expanded significantly, offering progressive, comprehensive
12services for people with disabilities; it promotes choices,
13dignity, and the opportunity to live and work in the community;
14it presently serves almost 1,200 persons daily; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Cornerstone Services advocates for people with
16disabilities and is recognized as a leader in providing support
17through seven-day program locations and 42 group homes in Will
18and Kankakee Counties; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Cornerstone Services' 550 full and part-time
20employees provide specialized services to empower individuals
21with as much independence as possible and help people find and

1keep jobs, maintain stable housing, and learn to access public
2transportation and community resources; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Last year, Cornerstone Services helped people
4with disabilities secure 187 new jobs, resulting in $1.5
5million in wages; through its assistance, 57 percent of people
6with mental illness who participate in the State's Individual
7Placement and Support Program are employed, far outpacing the
8national average of 15 percent employment for said group; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Cornerstone Services is guided by the principle of
10individual choice, as evidenced by individuals being treated
11with dignity and respect and being offered a variety of choices
12and supportive measures to make informed decisions; service
13plans are developed with, not for, individuals and are driven
14by the individual served and his or her supporters; the
15fulfillment of its mission is a continued greater independence
16for individuals with disabilities; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we congratulate Cornerstone Services on its 50th anniversary,
20and we wish it continued success as it serves those with
21disabilities in Will and Kankakee Counties; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
