HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the students, administration, and faculty of Lincoln College on the 155th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College is a private, liberal arts college, fully-accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association; it was established in 1865 to fill the need for an institution of higher learning in central Illinois; and

WHEREAS, A charter for the new college, then known as Lincoln University, was secured from the Illinois General Assembly on February 6, 1865; ground was broken for University Hall, the college's first building, just six days later on Abraham Lincoln's birthday; and

WHEREAS, The foundation was completed, and the cornerstone was laid by September of 1865; instruction for men and women began in November of 1866, with the first commencement in 1868 with three graduates; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College has recently undertaken a transformation back to a four-year institution, with a dozen bachelor's degree programs, while continuing to offer associate degrees; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College is a tremendously diverse institution that provides high-quality education and individualized attention with a low faculty to student ratio; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College plays a vital role in the economic development and community engagement of the city of Lincoln and Logan County; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College not only offers academic programs but also a variety of sports teams, clubs, and organizations; extracurricular activities provide students with opportunities to learn life and leadership skills outside the classroom; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the students, administration, and faculty of Lincoln College on the 155th anniversary of its founding, and we wish them many more wonderful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lincoln College as an expression of our esteem and respect.
