HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Margie Gavin Woods of Joliet, who passed away on January 29, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods lived in Joliet where she raised her six children with her husband of 36 years, Floyd Woods; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods served as a County Commissioner representing District 8 from 1980 until her retirement in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods was the first Black woman to become Minority Speaker of the Will County Board; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods worked at Caterpillar in the Machine Shop and was a career-long member of the Machine Shop Coalition of Black Trade Unionists; later in life, she attended Lewis University's College of Business to advance her career; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods served St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in the kitchen ministry, as Chairwoman of the Building Fund Committee, and as President of the Senior Usher Ministry; she also served in the Joliet Branch of the NAACP, as Deputy Registrar for Black Women Hook Up, as Precinct Committeewoman, and as Vice-President of the Will County Democrats; and

WHEREAS, Margie Woods was a community leader, trailblazer, and mentor, and those who knew her described her as being long-serving, dutiful, and involved; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Margie Gavin Woods and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Margie Woods as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
