HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Margie
4Gavin Woods of Joliet, who passed away on January 29, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Margie Woods lived in Joliet where she raised her
6six children with her husband of 36 years, Floyd Woods; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Margie Woods served as a County Commissioner
8representing District 8 from 1980 until her retirement in 2008;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Margie Woods was the first Black woman to become
11Minority Speaker of the Will County Board; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Margie Woods worked at Caterpillar in the Machine
13Shop and was a career-long member of the Machine Shop Coalition
14of Black Trade Unionists; later in life, she attended Lewis
15University's College of Business to advance her career; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Margie Woods served St. Paul Missionary Baptist
17Church in the kitchen ministry, as Chairwoman of the Building
18Fund Committee, and as President of the Senior Usher Ministry;
19she also served in the Joliet Branch of the NAACP, as Deputy
20Registrar for Black Women Hook Up, as Precinct Committeewoman,

1and as Vice-President of the Will County Democrats; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Margie Woods was a community leader, trailblazer,
3and mentor, and those who knew her described her as being
4long-serving, dutiful, and involved; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we mourn the passing of Margie Gavin Woods and extend our
8sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
9and loved her; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Margie Woods as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
