SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Sally Stovall, who passed away on May 21,
42019 at the age of 70; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was born in Eunice, Louisiana to
6Reverend James L. and Alice Stovall on April 16, 1949; she grew
7up in South Louisiana; she graduated from Southern Methodist
8University and received her master's degree at Loyola
9University, Chicago; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall lived in Taiwan, Malaysia,
11Argentina, and across the United States, impacting lives before
12settling down in Oak Park in 2002; she worked for Illinois
13Action for Children; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall relished visiting her
15grandchildren; after retiring from a career in organizational
16development, she embarked on a new career as a climate activist
17and community organizer with a passion for making the world a
18better place for future generations; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall, alongside her loving partner Dick
20Alton, held a community meeting about global warming and formed
21Green Community Connections in September 2010; she took the

1helm and enlisted volunteers to create a website, launched
2monthly newsletters, and held community meetings about native
3plants, edible gardens, food waste, organic lawn care, and
4more; her efforts helped spur a steady and sustained green
5revolution in Oak Park and River Forest; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall spearheaded Green Community
7Connections' largest program, the One Earth Film Festival, in
82012; she was instrumental in the success of the film festival
9over the years, leading the charge to spread the festival to
10Lake County and expanding its reach from the original
11boundaries of Oak Park and River Forest; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall leveraged Green Block Parties to
13disseminate news about planting milkweed, an essential food for
14monarch caterpillar survival, in support of a project near and
15dear to her heart called "Mobilizing for Monarchs"; and
 
16    WHEREAS, In 2015, Sally Stovall and Dick challenged
17themselves to give up their car for 90 days in order to lower
18CO2 emissions; in 2018, they gave up their car entirely; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was a real-life role model for
20living by your values; she was committed to building resiliency
21for our planet and its people and connecting others to what
22really matters; and

1    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall was preceded in death by her
2parents, Reverend James L. Stovall and Alice Stovall; and her
3siblings, Mary Alice Ballard and James "Jim" Stovall; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Sally Stovall is survived by her partner, Richard
5"Dick" Alton; her sister, Carol (Pete) Broussard; her children,
6Lee (Britt) Emerick and Teresa (Jeff) Madsen; her
7grandchildren, Finn and Rory Madsen; and her many nieces and
8nephews; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Sally Stovall and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
12friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Sally Stovall as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
