SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Julius W. Hegeler II of Danville, who
4passed away on July 5, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II was born in Danville to Madelle
6and Edward C. Hegeler II on May 9, 1928; he graduated from
7Danville High School in 1946; after attending the University of
8Illinois and serving in the Army National Guard for three
9years, he earned a business degree from Millikin University in
101950; he then enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he
11was a decorated fighter pilot and flew 70 missions in the
12Korean War as a first lieutenant; he married Bobette Steely in
131956; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II returned to Danville in 1955
15and, along with his brother Edward and partners Harry and
16Robert Peterson, built what would become Peterson-Puritan
17Inc., a chemical packaging company and one of Vermilion
18County's largest employers; the company was sold to Corn
19Products Co. in 1966, but he remained a vice president until
20his retirement in 1978; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II loved his community and always
22strived to make it a better place for all who lived there; in

1the latter part of his life, he donated millions to local
2entities and projects; most of his philanthropic efforts
3focused on education, the environment, health care, historic
4preservation, the arts, and helping people with disabilities;
5his generosity benefited numerous organizations, including the
6Danville Public Schools, OSF Healthcare Sacred Heart Medical
7Center, the Danville AMBUCS, the Vermilion County Conservation
8District, the Danville Family YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of
9Danville, the Danville Area Community College Foundation,
10WorkSource Enterprises, the Danville Public Library
11Foundation, the United Way of Danville Area, the Laura Lee
12Fellowship House, the Vermilion County War Museum, and the
13Vermilion County Airport Authority; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II was preceded in death by his
15parents; his wife, Bobette; his sister, Madelle Semerjian; and
16his brother, Edward Hegeler; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Julius Hegeler II is survived by his daughters,
18Alix Hegeler and Madelle Hegeler; and his son, Harlin Steely
19Hegeler; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
22Julius W. Hegeler II and extend our sincere condolences to his
23family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
