| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Jannie Smith, who passed away on March | 4 | | 26, 2022; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was born to Will and Carrie Jones in | 6 | | Evergreen, Alabama on February 6, 1927; she married Clarence | 7 | | "Smitty" Smith on August 3, 1963; a studious and motivated | 8 | | child, she received her early education in Johnsonville, | 9 | | Alabama; she attended cosmetology school and received her | 10 | | license in New Jersey; she continued her educational | 11 | | aspirations after moving to Chicago and obtained her | 12 | | certification as a CNA from Moraine Valley Community College; | 13 | | and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith worked at the Westside VA and Little | 15 | | Company of Mary Hospital; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith volunteered with Consuela York in | 17 | | the Prison Ministry; she also volunteered at various food | 18 | | panties around the City of Chicago and was an election judge | 19 | | for 25 years; her love for children led her to South Central | 20 | | Community Services, where she learned the importance of and | 21 | | need for helping other children; she was a foster grandmother | 22 | | and cared for 12 children during her 95 years; a proud mother |

| 1 | | of six children, she was a surrogate mother to many children | 2 | | who resided in her home and adopted three, raising them as her | 3 | | own; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was deeply committed to her faith | 5 | | and served her church as a Sunday School teacher, a faithful | 6 | | choir member, a Baptist Training Union (BTU) teacher, a | 7 | | mission worker, and a child evangelist with the Good News | 8 | | Club, in which she received a certification of training; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith loved cooking for her family, | 10 | | friends, and church and especially enjoyed, stylish clothes, | 11 | | fancy cars, good food, and great conversation; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was preceded in death by her husband | 13 | | and her daughter, Shirley Mae Crook; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jannie Smith is survived by her daughters, | 15 | | Barbara Ann Cook, Valerie Jerriel Walker (Denton), Cherry Lynn | 16 | | Patterson (Searl), Sonia Sabrina McAfee (Cannon), Sharita | 17 | | Princess Smith-Bolden, and Shakeda Princess Smith; her special | 18 | | daughter, NeNe King; her two sons, John (Phyllis) Lesley | 19 | | Sanders and Amun Smith; her 22 grandchildren; her 18 | 20 | | great-grandchildren; her three great-great-grandchildren; her | 21 | | nieces and nephews; her cousins; her friends; her two very | 22 | | special friends, Exie Hall and Ms. Kay; and the Household of |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 3 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| 4 | | Jannie Smith and extend our sincere
condolences to her family, | 5 | | friends, and all who knew and loved
her; and be it further
