| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Law enforcement officers of Illinois put their | 3 | | lives on the line to protect and serve the residents of our | 4 | | great State; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The police officers of Illinois keep our | 6 | | communities safe, help prevent crime, and provide assistance | 7 | | to those in need, among an infinite number of other tasks to | 8 | | encourage civic engagement and an investment in the well-being | 9 | | of all Illinoisans; they work with our schools, community | 10 | | organizations, and other local partners to offer assistance | 11 | | and educational opportunities to residents; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The first police department in the United States | 13 | | was established in New York City in 1844 and officially | 14 | | organized in 1845; other cities followed suit, including | 15 | | Chicago in 1855; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the | 17 | | enduring courage and unwavering devotion of law enforcement | 18 | | officers to the communities that they have sworn to serve; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, There are currently more than 900,000 sworn law | 20 | | enforcement officers and more than 17,000 state and local law | 21 | | enforcement agencies serving nationwide; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Approximately 12 percent of current law | 2 | | enforcement officers are female; and | 3 | | WHEREAS, In uncertain times, these men and women are the | 4 | | first response in the face of crisis or tragedy, and they | 5 | | continue to put on their uniforms to bravely face challenges | 6 | | to ensure the general welfare of our society; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, In 2021, 582 officers made the ultimate sacrifice | 8 | | while serving our great nation, including ten in Illinois; our | 9 | | fallen officers should be remembered and honored for their | 10 | | courage and sacrifice; and | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May | 12 | | 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar | 13 | | week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week; therefore, | 14 | | be it | 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 15 to | 17 | | May 21, 2022 as Police Appreciation Week in the State of | 18 | | Illinois; and be it further | 19 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize the dedication and sacrifice | 20 | | of local, state, and federal police officers and their service |

| 1 | | to our great State; and be it further | 2 | | RESOLVED, That we celebrate the contributions of law | 3 | | enforcement from across the State, recognizing their hard | 4 | | work, dedication, loyalty, and commitment to keeping our | 5 | | communities safe; and be it further | 6 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize the families of law | 7 | | enforcement officers for their endless sacrifices; and be it | 8 | | further | 9 | | RESOLVED, That we encourage all residents of Illinois to | 10 | | recognize the essential mission that law enforcement officers | 11 | | undertake every day and thank them for their dedication and | 12 | | service.
