SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

105 ILCS 5/34-18.78 new

    Amends the School Code. Provides that each school board shall adopt a policy to allow pupils, parents, guardians, and members of the public to review each textbook that the superintendent or school board is considering approving for use in the schools of the district for a period of no less than 30 days prior to the textbook being approved for use by the superintendent or the school board. Provides that the policy must be published in the student handbook and on the district's Internet website if one is maintained. Effective July 1, 2022.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
510-20.83 and 34-18.78 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/10-20.83 new)
7    Sec. 10-20.83. Textbook review.
8    (a) In this Section, "textbook" means any book or book
9substitute that a pupil uses as a text or text substitute,
10including an electronic textbook. "Textbook" includes a book,
11reusable workbook, manual, whether bound or in loose-leaf
12form, instructional computer software, or an electronic
13textbook and the technological equipment necessary to gain
14access to and use the electronic textbook that is intended as a
15principal source of study material for a given class or group
16of students.
17    (b) Each school board shall adopt a policy to allow
18pupils, parents, guardians, and members of the public to
19review each textbook that the district superintendent or
20school board is considering approving for use in the schools
21of the district for a period of no less than 30 days prior to
22the textbook being approved for use by the district
