SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
55 ILCS 5/3-6001.5

    Amends the Sheriff Division of the Counties Code. Provides that a person is not eligible to be elected or appointed to the office of sheriff unless the person has a certificate attesting to his or her successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course or the county corrections training (rather than only the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course) as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board or substantially similar training programs of another state or the federal government. Specifies that the training requirement does not apply to a sheriff serving on the effective date of the amendatory Act.

1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing
5Section 3-6001.5 as follows:
 
6    (55 ILCS 5/3-6001.5)
7    Sec. 3-6001.5. Sheriff qualifications. A person is not
8eligible to be elected or appointed to the office of sheriff,
9unless that person meets all of the following requirements:
10        (1) Is a United States citizen.
11        (2) Has been a resident of the county for at least one
12    year.
13        (3) Is not a convicted felon.
14        (4) Has a certificate attesting to his or her
15    successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law
16    Enforcement Officers Training Course or the county
17    corrections training as prescribed by the Illinois Law
18    Enforcement Training Standards Board or a substantially
19    similar training programs program of another state or the
20    federal government. This paragraph does not apply to a
21    sheriff currently serving on the effective date of this
22    amendatory Act of the 102nd General Assembly this
23    amendatory Act of the 101st General Assembly.
