HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Dairy animals have provided people around the
3globe with a reliable and abundant source of milk and
4milk-based products, such as butter, yogurt, various kinds of
5cheese, ice cream, milk, and concentrated and dry milk
6products; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Nutrient-rich dairy foods play an important role
8in child and adult nutrition and are good sources of several
9vital nutrients, including calcium, potassium, vitamins D and
10A, protein, and phosphorus; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Eating nutritious dairy foods, such as milk,
12cheese, and yogurt, improves bone health, especially in
13children and adolescents, and is associated with reduced risk
14of cardiovascular disease and lower blood pressure in adults
15and a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Global demand for protein-rich dairy products is
17rising, and the nation's dairy exports have more than
18quadrupled since 2000, to nearly $5 billion in 2016; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The nation's top five export markets include
20Mexico ($1.2 billion in sales), Southeast Asia ($671 million
21in sales), Canada ($632 million in sales), China ($384 million

1in sales), and South America ($280 million in sales); and
 
2    WHEREAS, Illinois has over 84,000 dairy cows, and Illinois
3milk production was 1.748 billion pounds in 2019 and 1.631
4billion pounds for the first 11 months of 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Illinois ranked 3rd in Ag exports to the world in
62019 with approximately $7.5 billion, in which dairy was the
77th highest product category (fresh dairy to cheese, etc.) at
8$232M in 2019 and $168M through the first three-fourths of
92020; and
 
10    WHEREAS, It is important to increase the exportation of
11dairy products from Illinois in the global economy to provide
12additional jobs for citizens of the State, to boost the
13State's economy and to provide citizens of other nations with
14wholesome, fresh dairy foods; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we urge the United States Department of Agriculture and the
18United States Department of Commerce to increase the
19exportation of Illinois dairy products to other nations; and
20be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
