HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Many peoples with serious, chronic mental
3illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe
4depression, or gastrointestinal disorders that include
5gastroparesis, nausea, and vomiting, require treatment with
6medications that work as dopamine receptor blocking agents
7(DRBAs), including antipsychotics; and
 
8    WHEREAS, While ongoing treatment with these medications
9can be very helpful, even lifesaving, for many people, it can
10also lead to Tardive Dyskinesia (TD); and
 
11    WHEREAS, Tardive Dyskinesia is a movement disorder that is
12characterized by random, involuntary, and uncontrolled
13movements of different muscles in the face, trunk, and
14extremities; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Tardive Dyskinesia can develop months, years, or
16decades after a person starts taking DRBAs and even after they
17have discontinued use of those medications; not everyone who
18takes a DRBA develops TD, but if it develops, it is often
19permanent; and
 
20    WHEREAS, It is estimated that over 500,000 Americans
21suffer from Tardive Dyskinesia; according to the National

1Alliance for Mental Illness, one in every four patients
2receiving long-term treatment with an antipsychotic medication
3will experience Tardive Dyskinesia; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Years of difficult and challenging research have
5resulted in recent scientific breakthroughs, with two new
6treatments for Tardive Dyskinesia approved by the United
7States Food and Drug Administration; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Tardive Dyskinesia is often unrecognized, and
9patients suffering from the illness are commonly misdiagnosed;
10regular screening for TD in patients taking DRBA medications
11is recommended by the American Psychiatric Association (APA);
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we declare the week of May 2, 2021 as "Tardive Dyskinesia
16Awareness Week" in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That we encourage every individual in the United
18States to become better informed about and aware of Tardive
19Dyskinesia.
