HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In order to bring more inclusivity to the state,
3Illinois must discuss the importance of disability awareness;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Disability awareness means educating people
6regarding disabilities and giving people the knowledge
7required to carry out a job or task, thus separating good
8practice from poor; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Many kids with disabilities are being integrated
10into the mainstream of the public school system so age
11appropriate education and refreshers are becoming even more
12important to teach our children; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In order to achieve a successful integration, it
14is important to implement disability awareness for all
15children across the state; and
 
16    WHEREAS, One of the biggest barriers people with
17disabilities encounter on a daily basis is other people; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Between 2009 and 2015, individuals with
19disabilities were more than twice as likely to be victims of
20violent victimization compared to people without disabilities;

2    WHEREAS, In one study, only 39 percent of respondents with
3disabilities reported that they had disclosed their disability
4to a manager, and an even fewer 24 percent had told other
5colleagues for fear of teasing, harassment, and potential
6changes in coworker relationships; and
 
7    WHEREAS, A research team reviewed information from the
8U.S. 2012 elections and found that almost a third of voters
9with disabilities experienced some kind of difficulty in the
10voting process; this differed greatly from those without
11disabilities; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The only way to stop these violent crimes and
13open discrimination against those with disabilities is to
14bring awareness to the issue and help educate people about the
15issues facing those with a disability; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we acknowledge the hardships faced by those with a disability
19and the need to increase education and awareness of these
20issues for people throughout the State of Illinois; and be it
21further

1    RESOLVED, That we encourage all citizens to educate
2themselves on the issues surrounding disabilities and to treat
3those with disabilities with love and respect.
