HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Brent Paterson, Ph.D., on the occasion of his retirement as chief of staff and assistant to the president of Illinois State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paterson earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Lambuth University in Jacksonville, Tennessee in 1979; he obtained his Master of Science in Counseling & Personnel Services from the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee in 1982; he earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Prior to Illinois State University, Dr. Paterson served in Student Affairs at Texas A&M University for nearly 17 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paterson came to Illinois State University in 2001; he initially served as senior associate vice president for Student Affairs from April 2001 to March 2014, where he oversaw the Bone Student Center, Braden Auditorium, Campus Dining Services, Campus Recreation, the Student Fitness Center, University Housing Services, and University Police; he also served as a clinical assistant professor in Educational Foundations and Administration; he was named interim vice president for Student Affairs in March 2014 and served in that capacity until June 2016; he served as assistant to the president from July 2016 until his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paterson has received a number of accolades during his career in higher education; he was recognized for outstanding contributions to the quality of life for students with Illinois State University's Neal R. Gamsky Award in 2011 and named a Pillar of the Profession of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in 2015; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paterson is known for keeping the needs of students at the forefront of his decisions and for his commitment to doing his utmost to enhance the college experience through his leadership, mentorship, or the development of his staff; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Brent Paterson, Ph.D., on the occasion of his retirement, and we recognize his commitment to Illinois State University; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Paterson as an expression of our esteem and respect.
