HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Martin
4"Marty" Ozinga III; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga began working for his family's
6business, Ozinga, at the age of 15 as a $1-per-hour laborer in
7the company's first yard in Evergreen Park; by the age of 18,
8he was driving a ready-mix concrete truck for union wages
9while earning a degree in psychology at Calvin College in
10Grand Rapids, Michigan; he became general manager in 1973 at
11age 23 and, in 1985, succeeded his father as president of
12Ozinga; he was married to his wife Ruth for 40 years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga led the business through a period of
14tremendous growth, including expansion in to the downtown
15Chicago market, where Ozinga supplied concrete for
16high-profile projects such as the construction of the new
17Comiskey Park (Guaranteed Rate Field), the renovation of
18Soldier Field, and the production of more than 250,000 cubic
19yards of concrete for the Dan Ryan Expressway; in 2012, he
20handed over the operations of the family business to his six
21sons and their cousin Jeff, representing the fourth generation
22of Ozinga ownership; and

1    WHEREAS, The Ozinga family has been deeply involved with
2Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, where Martin
3Ozinga Jr., father of Marty, was one of the school's founders;
4the school's Ozinga Chapel was built in 2001 in honor of Martin
5Ozinga Jr. and his wife; Marty Ozinga served on the college's
6board of trustees, and he and his wife, Ruth, were co-chairs of
7the college's capital fundraising campaign; four of their sons
8attended Trinity Christian; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga found great joy in volunteering much
10of his time to Christian organizations; he will especially be
11remembered for treating co-workers with care and respect and
12generously giving of his time and resources to causes that
13helped those less fortunate in local communities and abroad;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Marty Ozinga was the beloved husband of Melissa
16(Ogden) Roeda and the late Ruth M. (Gombis) Ozinga; the loving
17father of Martin IV (Amy), Karl, Justin (Annie), Aaron
18(Amanda), Paul (Sarah), and Rep. Timothy (Amanda); the
19cherished grandfather of Martin V, Elyse, Jack, Ezra, Ayanna,
20Sunniva, Jude, Noah, Carmalee, Mercy, Mikayla, Alivia, Sydney,
21Gwyneth, Eden, Gavin, Macey, Austin, Isaac, Max, Ruth, Luke,
22Axel, Willa, Ezekiel, Ava, Aria, Zoe, and Elle; the dearest
23brother of Beverly Ozinga and the late Kenneth (Judy) Ozinga;
24the dear brother-in-law of Dr. Leon (Kathryn) Gombis and the

1late Theodore (Niki) Gombis; the much loved uncle of many
2nieces and nephews; the dear stepfather of Joshua (Karie)
3Roeda, Ryan (Melinda) Roeda, and Corinne (Brent) Guynes; and
4the step-grandfather of Aubrey, Addison, Amelia, Kylie, Cora,
5Liam, Sawyer, and Isla; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we mourn the passing of Martin "Marty" Ozinga III and extend
9our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who
10knew and loved him; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Marty Ozinga as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
