HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Sangamon County on the
4occasion of its bicentennial anniversary on January 30, 2021;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sangamon County was established by an act of the
7Illinois General Assembly on January 30, 1821; at that time,
8it was subdivided from Madison and Bond counties and was one of
9only 33 counties in Illinois; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sangamon County was named for the Sangamon River,
11which runs through it; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Kelley Family, Elisha, John, Henry, and their
13relatives, are usually considered the first Europeans to live
14in the boundaries of what is now Springfield; John Kelley, who
15arrived in Sangamon County in the spring of 1819, built a cabin
16in 1821 near what is now Second and Jefferson streets that was
17used as the first Sangamon County courthouse; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Springfield was confirmed as the permanent county
19seat in 1825 following the Illinois General Assembly's
20decision to reduce Sangamon County's boundaries for the first
21time; and

1    WHEREAS, Since 1821, Sangamon County and its residents
2have played a vital role in the State's history and the
3country's history and has been home to many notable residents
4and events; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The bicentennial anniversary of Sangamon County
6is an opportunity to reflect on the past 200 years and
7celebrate the many cultural, political, economic, and academic
8contributions made by the county and its residents to the
9state, the nation, and the world; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Today, Sangamon County is known as a model of
11good government practices and for providing timely and
12efficient services to the residents; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Sangamon County has demonstrated its ability to
14offer good stewardship of taxpayer dollars by maintaining low
15taxes on its residents while also making investments for the
16future; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Sangamon County has been a leader on critical
18public works projects, including the 10th Street Rail
19Consolidation project in Springfield, which has been
20recognized as one of the top public works projects in the
21nation due in part to the county's leadership at shepherding

1this project along with other community partners; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives is honored
3to conduct the business of the people of the State of Illinois
4in Sangamon County, the home county of President Abraham
5Lincoln, and looks forward to many more years of success to
6come; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate Sangamon County on the occasion of its
10bicentennial and send our best wishes for the future to the
11people and leaders of Sangamon County; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Chairman of the Sangamon County Board and all
14Sangamon County Board Members as a symbol of our esteem and
15respect.
