HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Mira Weber on her impressive tenure as principal at Agassiz Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Mira Weber began her teaching career in 1999 as a special education teacher in Chicago; in January 2000, she transferred to Agassiz Elementary School, where she spent the next six years, three teaching special education students in middle school and then three teaching general education primary age students; she completed her principal residency with LAUNCH (Leadership Academy and Urban Network Chicago) and became the principal at Agassiz Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, During her time as principal of Agassiz Elementary School, Mira Weber has doubled its enrollment, maintained a diverse student body, served families from over 40 Chicagoland zip codes, completed over seven million dollars in capital renovations, and gained authorization as an IB World School PreK-8th, one of only nine in CPS; and

WHEREAS, Through Mira Webers's leadership, Agassiz Elementary School became the first CPS school to address its namesake's history of racism through a student-based inquiry process; she spearheaded a campaign to rename the school after someone who would offer inspiration to the students and community; after taking into account student, parent, and staff opinions, the school is in transition to become Harriet Tubman School; and

WHEREAS, Mira Weber grew up in Minnesota and was the oldest child of three; her siblings have multiple disabilities that heavily impacted their education and educational experiences, and it was through them and through watching her parents advocate for them that the foundation for her belief in the rights and high expectations for all children was formed; and

WHEREAS, Mira Weber has two boys of her own, ages 9 and 10, who attend Agassiz Elementary school, and she will forever be invested in her community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mira Weber on her impressive tenure as principal at Agassiz Elementary School, and we wish her the best in all her future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mira Weber as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
