HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Honorable Wyvetter H. Younge was one of the
3longest serving representatives in the Illinois House of
4Representatives; she was first elected to the House in 1975
5and made urban renewal one of her top priorities; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Rep. Younge was born on August 23, 1930 in St.
7Louis, Missouri, the youngest of five children; her mother,
8Annie Hoover, managed a restaurant in East St. Louis, and her
9father sold insurance and owned various properties; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rep. Younge graduated from Lincoln Senior High
11School in East St. Louis; after graduating, she attended the
12Hampton Institute for her undergraduate degree; in 1953, she
13earned a law degree from the St. Louis University School of
14Law, and in 1972, she earned a second law degree from the
15Washington University School of Law; and
 
16    WHEREAS, While in Springfield, Rep. Younge was a true
17champion for the people of her district; many of the bills she
18sponsored focused on issues such as substance abuse treatment,
19services for the homeless, and economic development in St.
20Clair County; after her passing, Illinois House Speaker
21Michael Madigan told reporters, "Wyvetter was a tireless
22advocate for East St. Louis who never stopped trying to

1improve the lives of her constituents"; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The East St Louis Higher Education Center offers
3educational courses and programs with collaborative partners,
4including community colleges and Southern Illinois University
5Edwardsville; higher education and training have been offered
6at the center since 1999 after the closing of the Metropolitan
7Community College; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10as a means to remember the great work of Rep. Wyvetter H.
11Younge, the General Assembly is urged to change the name of the
12East St. Louis Higher Education Center to the Wyvetter H.
13Younge Higher Education Center; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15delivered to the Speaker of the House, the Senate President,
16the House Minority Leader, the Senate Minority Leader, and the
17East St. Louis Higher Education Center.
