HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on Delta Day 2021; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded by 22 illustrious college-educated young women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in January 1913 and is celebrating its 108th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Shortly after the founding of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the 22 young women participated in the Women's Suffrage March and demanded rights for women, including the right to vote, which transformed the role of women in the democratic process; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college-educated women committed to the constructive development of its members through public service with a primary focus on the black community; and

WHEREAS, The sorority's programs are implemented through its Five Point Programmatic Thrust, which includes economic development, educational development, physical and mental health, political awareness and involvement, and international awareness and involvement; and

WHEREAS, Members of the sorority are accomplished corporate, civic, and public officials and acclaimed scholars; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has a membership of more than 200,000 college-educated women in more than 1020 chapters worldwide, of which 20 chapters are located in the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission instituted Delta Days in the Nation's Capital as an annual legislative conference to increase member involvement in the public policy-making process; and

WHEREAS, Delta Day at the Illinois State Capitol has occurred on an annual basis with members from across the State in attendance; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on Delta Day 2021 and its theme of "Fortitude"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Delta Sigma Theta as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
