HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Alpha on
4its sesquicentennial on June 1, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On June 1, 1872, Anson Calkins created a plan for
6the Village of Alpha; it was created as a railroad town and
7replaced the town of Oxford, which was located approximately
8three miles west of current day Alpha; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Alpha was located at the junction between two
10lines of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad; a
11since-razed depot was located at the junction; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The village was named Alpha, the first letter of
13the Greek alphabet, because Anson Calkins believed it was the
14beginning of a great city; it was officially incorporated on
15January 11, 1895; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Today, the population of Alpha is home to
17approximately 700 people; nestled on the corners of Knox,
18Henry, and Mercer counties along US Highway 150, the town is a
19quiet bedroom community located between three large population
20centers, consisting of the Quad Cities with 381,000 people,
21Galesburg with 77,000 people, and Peoria with 416,000 people;

2    WHEREAS, Many residents gladly embrace a commute to work
3consisting of 25 minutes or less as a trade off for more
4affordable housing and taxes, smaller classroom sizes in
5schools, an abundance of community events, and the chance to
6join many area clubs and organizations; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate the Village of Alpha on its sesquicentennial
10on June 1, 2022; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable a copy of this resolution be
12presented to the Village of Alpha as a symbol of our respect
13and esteem.
